When I saw the first postcard on the Internet, I was tempted to go to Austria. Hallstatt is really beautiful, especially when there is fog in the morning. But it is overheated by the locals. Compared with other Austrian towns, there are more locals and tour groups here, and they want a quiet vacation. They recommend st. Wolfgang, a 40-minute drive from Hallstatt.
Vienna to Hallstatt requires a train to attending-Buchheim and a transfer to the R or REX train to Hallstatt. The small station is on the east side of the lake, while the town is on the west side of the lake. You need to take a ferry to the other side. It takes about 6 to 8 minutes.
It is recommended to stay at the Dormio Resort opposite the town, which is very quiet. The hotel has a dock, and you can go to Hallstatt by boat every hour. The journey is about 10 minutes and you can enjoy the lake scenery along the way. The latest return trip is 5:30, and remember to bring your coat. The lake is very windy.
